Gabriel Fuentes holds a Ph.D. in Economics and Business Administration from the Norwegian School of Economics, a Master of Science degree in Supply Chain Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and a Master of Science degree in Maritime Affairs with a specialization in Shipping Management and Logistics from the World Maritime University.
Before entering academia, Fuentes worked as a Navigation and Cargo Officer at Euronav. He has served as an advisor to supranational entities such as the Maritime Technology Cooperation Center Latin America (an IMO and EU-sponsored center) and as a group coordinator for the international committee developing ISO 21745:2019 on electronic record books for ships. Additionally, Fuentes has developed e-learning courses for the United Nations on estimating maritime emissions using geospatial big data.
Fuentes has presented his work at international conferences and events in both academic and industrial settings, and has published articles in journals such as Transportation Research Part E and Part D. He has also refereed for journals on topics relevant to shipping operations, maritime informatics, and shipping management. He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, the International Association of Maritime Economists, and holds a Certificate of Competency as a Chief Officer for unlimited tonnage vessels trading worldwide (STCW regulation II/2).
He is proficient in SQL, Python, Spark, Flask, MPI, Docker, Machine Learning, and Big Data Analytics. His research interests include shipping economics, digitalization and management, machine learning, big data handling, data science applications for the UNSDGs, maritime informatics, and operations research. Fuentes is dedicated to sharing his knowledge and experience with students, aiming to empower the next generation of maritime professionals.
