Biographies and stories of leaders and leadership abound to such an extent that they have become a key way in which both academic and lay knowledge of leadership is constructed. However, such narratives often sustain an uncritical and heroic notion of leadership.
The purpose of this talk is to take a narrative as social practice approach to leadership and leader identity. Showcasing this methodology, I investigate, on the one hand, how stories of leadership and leaders’ stories are constructed as part of in situ social practice and, on the other hand, I examine what these stories achieve as social action.
