Master the theory empirics link at newly designed workshop

Are you a PhD student in management struggling to connect you research idea to theory and data? This course is built to tackle that exact challenge.

When: October 6–10
Where: at NHH
Language: English
Credits: 6 ECTS

This fall, NHH is hosting the ENGAGE.EU "Workshop on Linking Theory and Empirics" (EEU512), a hands-on, intensive course that helps you build stronger bridges between your research question and the theoretical and empirical elements of your research.

Led by Assoc. Prof. Björn Schmeisser (NHH) and Univ. Prof. Jan Hendrik Fisch (WU Vienna), this in-person workshop brings together PhD students from across Europe for five days of focused learning, peer exchange, and expert feedback.

"A strong alignment between question, theory, and data is key in quantitative research, and it’s the first thing reviewers look for. This workshop gives PhD students the tools, feedback, and insight to get it right from the start," says Björn Schmeisser.

What to expect

This is an interactive course blending lectures, coaching, peer feedback, and hands-on model development. You will present your project, refine it throughout the week, and leave with a much stronger theoretical model that stands up to peer review.

Evening sessions offer informal networking over food and drinks because breakthroughs often happen over conversation.

Why you should apply

Too often, promising PhD projects stall because the path from theory to empirical testing isn’t clear. This workshop helps you:

  • Translate abstract concepts into testable models

  • Strengthen the theoretical backbone of your dissertation

  • Anticipate and address reviewer feedback

  • Connect with peers working on similar challenges

You will return to your project with new clarity, sharper tools, and a clearer direction forward.

“Applications keep rolling in. Even at the height of the summer break we received ten strong submissions in July alone, spanning the ENGAGE.EU map from Helsinki to Rome and from Tilburg to Vienna. We still have a few seats left, and as the host institution we’d love to see NHH PhD candidates claim them," says Schmeisser.

How to apply

Send a PDF (maximum 3 pages) describing your project and explaining why it fits within the course.

Admission to the course is granted on a rolling basis. Apply soon to secure your spot. You will receive an admission decision within 7–10 days after submitting your application.

Once your application has been approved, you can register for the course through Studentweb.
