Coronavirus: Web-based teaching

All our teaching will now be online. Here is an overview of available tools and links to step-by-step instructions on how to produce and share videos from your home office.

We have promised the students that we will do our utmost to enable them to complete the semester and take their exams, regardless of how the coronavirus situation develops.

Be creative and try to find alternative ways to ensure the students’ learning outcome even though we cannot meet them in the classrooms.

Try to replace your remaining lectures with videos or other learning materials where you cover the same topics. Simple is fine!

Provide your students with videos and other learning materials on Canvas.

Communication is important! Please be active on Canvas and inform your students as soon as possible about any changes and workarounds caused by the coronavirus situation. If there are no changes, reassure your students that everything will continue as scheduled.

Communication is important between colleagues as well. If you discover smart ways to teach online, tell your colleagues!

Five tips for web-based teaching

PRODUCING AND SHARING VIDEOS

Videos do not have to be fancy. Keep it simple, use e.g. audio recordings, simple screenshots in Powerpoint, Canvas Studio, on your iPad, etc.

Feel free to use lecture recordings from previous years.

RECORD VIDEOS – WHAT TO DO?

To create your own videos at home you need:

  • A computer
  • Software with screen capture capacity, e.g. PowerPoint, Teams, Canvas
  • A microphone (most laptops have these built-in, but the sound might be poor)
  • A webcam (optional – screen and sound might be enough)

If you lack a microphone or webcam, contact helpdesk@nhh.no to get in touch with the Office of IT Services.

USE MICROSOFT TEAMS

Teams is available on all platforms and as an NHH employee or student, you already have an account. With Teams you can:

  • Do one-to-many presentations (webinars)
  • Include multiple presenters who can present content from their screens, including external (non-NHH) contributors
  • Include a Q&A feed
  • Have students join from a static link which you make available in Canvas
  • Record your online lecture and make it available for your students

If you want to make live events, you will need to get a license from the Office of IT Services.

You can also use Teams to create screen recordings, with no audience present.
