Coronavirus: Student assessment

Students shall not miss important information or learning when they study from home. Here's some information on what you can do regarding requirements for course approval, student assessment and exams, grading scales and home exams and term papers.

If the new online learning situation makes it difficult or impossible for students to fulfill the original requirements for course approval, you can make the necessary changes.

REQUIREMENTS FOR COURSE APPROVAL

If you change the requirements for course approval, make sure you inform the students in a very clear way on Canvas. This information might be needed later, for example if a student does not obtain course approval and decides to appeal this decision so please also notify the Office of Student and Academic Affairs (email to Maj-Brit Iden).

Workaround examples:

  • If you had scheduled student presentations, you can ask your students to produce and submit video presentations.
  • If you had scheduled an activity that it is hard to replicate online (e.g. participation), you can drop this as a requirement for course approval.
  • If you had scheduled lab sessions or group tutorials, you can offer a video tutorial and/or supervise groups of students on Skype or in Teams sessions.

If you want to test your plans before you publish them on Canvas: Contact Linda Nøstbakken or one of the program leaders; Per Manne (bachelor), Endre Bjørndal (MØA/MSc) or Kjell Ove Røsok (MRR).

You can also postpone deadlines and offer alternatives to individual students, if they need this for medical reasons.

STUDENT ASSESSMENT/EXAMS

If you want to change the assessment form in your course, please contact the Section for Exams to explore your options. Any changes in student assessment requires approval by the vice rector for academic affairs, Linda Nøstbakken.

home exams for school exams

All school exams this semester will be replaced by digital exams that the students write at home on the date of the school exam. This will be the case regardless of how the coronavirus situation develops. We will ask you to submit your exams by April 15th this semester (translations can be submitted closer to the date of the exam).

On Friday March 20th, we aim to send out details on the home exam format to the instructors of all courses for which this is relevant. We want to provide you with a set of options for how you can setup such exam, along with everything else you might need to prepare the exam.

Given the new exam format, there might be good arguments for changing the grading scale from A-F to Pass/Fail in some courses. In this case, you will have to make it very clear to the students what it requires to pass the course. The pass/fail threshold is usually higher than between E and F, implying that it takes more to obtain a passing grade on this scale than on the A-F scale. You will obtain more information on this in the abovementioned note to all instructors on or around March 20th. Please wait until you receive this information before requesting a change in grading scale.

HOME EXAMS AND TERM PAPERS

For those of you with term papers or home exams scheduled for the coming weeks, use Canvas to reassure your students that we will continue according to plan – the only difference is that now everything will be web-based.

Group-based term papers: The coronavirus is not necessarily a valid argument to let students write individual papers instead of working in groups. All students have access to collaboration platforms like Office365 and Teams, and they can also collaborate over Skype.

Coronavirus: Web-based teaching

All our teaching will now be online. Here is an overview of available tools and links to step-by-step instructions on how to produce and share videos from your home office.
