    The objectives of the course are to introduce the participants to research traditions and current developments and emerging issues in management accounting research, and to develop the participants’ skills to communicate research in both written and oral form.

    The course focuses particularly on the design and use of management accounting and control system, emerging topics in management accounting research, and methodological issues in management accounting research. The course has three main parts

    1. The nature, scope, and content of the field of management accounting.
    2. New and emerging topics in management accounting research, including digitalization, sustainability management accounting, and dynamic management accounting systems.
    3. Research methods in management accounting and control systems in organizations

  • Learning outcome

    After completing the course, the students are able to:

    Knowledge:

    • Understand what management accounting is (and what it is not)
    • Understand what are the current trends and emerging topics in management accounting research
    • Understand alternative research approaches typically used in management accounting research

    Skills:

    • Have to skills to develop good research questions, solid argumentation and research design in management accounting

    General competence:

    • Be able to communicate and discuss own and others’ management accounting research both written and in oral form

  • Teaching

    Combination of lectures and student presentations. 

  • Restricted access

    PhD candidates from NHH as well as PhD candidates from other institutions can take part in the course.

  • Recommended prerequisites

    Management accounting courses at bachelor level / courses in research method at master level.

  • Required prerequisites

    Management accounting courses at bachelor level / courses in research method at master level.

  • Compulsory Activity

    Student presentations.

    Compulsory activities (work requirements) are valid for one semester after the semester they were obtained.

  • Assessment

    Individual term paper. 

    Re-take is offered the semester after the course was offered for students with valid compulsory activities (work requirements).

  • Grading Scale

    Pass / fail.

  • Literature

    Compendium of articles.
