Lidl’s Bold Move to NK Signals a New Era for Swedish Retail

In a development that has surprised many in the retail industry, Lidl Sverige has confirmed that it will open a full-scale grocery store inside Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) in central Stockholm during the summer of 2027.

The move brings one of Europe’s best-known discount supermarket chains into one of Sweden’s most prestigious retail destinations, creating an unusual combination of luxury and low prices under the same roof.

Consumer behaviour is changing rapidly

For decades, NK has been synonymous with premium shopping, fashion, beauty products, and exclusive dining experiences. The decision to welcome Lidl reflects how rapidly consumer behaviour is changing.

According to NK, customers have increasingly requested a broader grocery offering, making Lidl a natural partner to help transform the department store into a more comprehensive shopping destination.

Hannes Hasselrot, CEO of Nordiska Kompaniet, said the partnership will make NK more relevant in people’s everyday lives while attracting additional visitors to the historic building.

Highly symbolic

The location itself adds another layer of significance. Lidl will occupy the same space once used by Ica, Sweden’s largest grocery retailer. Ica operated a food hall-style supermarket in NK’s lower level but exited the site in 2018 after struggling to achieve profitability.

The arrival of Lidl in the very same premises has been described by retail observers as highly symbolic, highlighting the German chain’s growing influence in the Swedish grocery market.

The move also marks a major step in Lidl’s evolution. Since entering Sweden in 2003, the company has expanded from a discount-focused newcomer into a nationwide retailer with ambitious growth plans, but still a discounter!

The chain continues to open new stores across the country and aims to reach approximately 300 locations in Sweden, up from 216 today.

About more than sales

Lidl has also worked to strengthen its reputation for quality, emphasizing fresh produce, bakery products, and premium private-label offerings alongside its traditional low-price positioning.

For Lidl, the NK project is about more than sales. It is a branding opportunity that places the company at one of Sweden’s most recognizable commercial addresses. Jakob Josefsson, CEO of Lidl Sverige, described the opening as an important milestone in the retailer’s growth journey, arguing that quality should be defined by craftsmanship and taste rather than price tags.

Industry analysts see the development as evidence that traditional distinctions between luxury and discount retail are increasingly blurred. Modern consumers often combine premium purchases with value-oriented grocery shopping, seeking both quality and affordability. Lidl’s presence at NK reflects this reality and may become a model for future retail developments in city centres.

When the doors open in 2027 it will symbolize the changing face of Swedish retail, where convenience, value and prestige can coexist in ways that would have seemed unlikely just a few years ago.
