Import protection and its consequences

Do we know enough about the import protection and its consequences? Enough to say that we protect not only Norwegian industry but also Norwegian consumer interests?

Import protection for agricultural products implies in the order of 13-14 billion in annual transfers to Norwegian farmers. There is wide political acceptance for this arrangement, and it is considered to be one important cost component, Norwegian consumers have to accept for availability of Norwegian-produced food. 

However, a recent analysis by Oslo Economics and Oeconomica, shows that import protection can also be one of the main reasons for the high concentration in the Norwegian food sector.

Do we know enough about the import protection and its consequences? Enough to say that we protect not only Norwegian industry but also Norwegian consumer interests?
