FAIR Annual Report 2024
FAIR has had a year marked by academic success, international collaboration, and significant societal impact. The 2024 Annual Report provides insight into the centre's many achievements, from publications in leading journals to events that have brought together the world’s foremost researchers in economics and social sciences.
Strong Academic Contributions
FAIR continued to assert itself as a leading institution in economic research in 2024. Researchers published 24 articles in renowned international journals, including Econometrica, The Review of Economic Studies, and The Economic Journal. The studies explored competition and career advancement, gender differences in risk-taking, and the acceptance of inequality among children in different cultural contexts.
International Conferences and Collaborations
Throughout the year, FAIR hosted several major events, including the EALE Conference (European Association of Labour Economists), which attracted over 500 participants worldwide. Other highlights included the SEEDEC Conference (Symposium on Economic Experiments in Developing Countries) and the Scientific Advisory Board Workshop, where FAIR researchers received valuable feedback from leading global experts.
PhD Defences and Academic Achievements
Several PhD students successfully defended their dissertations this year, covering topics ranging from economic mobility and poverty to behavioral economics and labor market research. FAIR researchers also received numerous awards, including prizes for innovative teaching and academic leadership.
Research with Political and Societal Impact
FAIR researchers played an active role in shaping policy by contributing to expert groups for the Norwegian government. Their analyses have informed recommendations in areas such as climate policy, health, education, and social inequality. FAIR researchers have been involved in studies on how kindergartens, schools, and after-school programs can reduce social disparities, as well as in drafting a report on effective dietary measures.
New Projects and Future Initiatives
Several new research projects continued to receive funding in 2024, including studies on universalism and economic inequality, media bias and political polarization, and labor market dynamics. FAIR also continued its commitment to international collaborations, working with institutions such as Harvard University and the European Economic Association.
Looking Ahead
Director Bertil Tungodden expresses great optimism for the future:
"Looking ahead, we are eager to build on our successes. We will continue to foster interdisciplinary collaboration, host inspiring events, and expand our research portfolio. Our vision remains clear: to advance our understanding of inequality and its impact on society, and to contribute to a fairer and more equitable world."
