Nobel Prize Laureate Merton to give Karl Borch Lecture

The 16th lecture in memory of NHH Professor Karl Borch, scheduled for September 20, will be held by Robert C. Merton.

Robert C. Merton is Professor of Finance at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Professor Emeritus at Harvard University.

Improving Economic Performance

He is currently resident scientist at Dimensional Holdings, Inc., where he is the creator of Target Retirement Solution, a global integrated retirement-funding solution system.

His 2018 Karl Borch Lecture topic is «Observations on Finance Science and Insurance Innovation in Improving Economic Performance».

Merton received the Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1997(with Myron S. Schole) for a new method to determine the value of derivatives.

Perfect Portfolio

Merton is the author of «Continuous-Time Finance» and a coauthor of several highly important publications, for example «Cases in Financial Engineering: Applied Studies of Financial Innovation», «The Global Financial System: A Functional Perspective» and Financial Economics. He has also been recognized for translating finance science into practice.

According to his biograph, his research focuses on finance theory, including lifecycle and retirement finance, optimal portfolio selection, capital asset pricing, pricing of derivative securities, credit risk, loan guarantees, financial innovation, the dynamics of institutional change, and improving the methods of measuring and managing macro-financial systemic risk.

Karl Borch was a professor at NHH during 1963-1986, and is considered one of the founders of Economics of Uncertainty, with a long list of interesting contributions published in leading scientific periodicals and books.

Leading scholars

The idea behind the Karl Borch Lecture is to attract a leading international scholar to hold an annual guest lecture about a current research theme for scientific staff, students, and others who are interested.

The Karl Borch Lecture 2018 Organizing Committee consists of Professor Gunnar Stensland, Professor Leif K. Sandal, Professor Guttorm Schjelderup, Professor Knut K. Aase and Professor Trond Døskeland. The lecture is arranged by the Department of Business and Management Science.
