Bergen's maritime cluster extends its investments in NHH
NHH’s agreement with Bergen Shipowners’ Association has been extended by five new years until August 2022. Professor Roar Os Ådland will continue to hold the professorship.
‘I am very pleased and grateful that Bergen Shipowners’ Association recognises the value of our work since 2012, and that they have therefore chosen to continue their investment in shipping research at NHH, now in collaboration with the Neptun Bergen Foundation,’ says Roar Os Ådland.
‘Industry funding of this kind is invaluable in relation to the competition for national research funding. It will enable us to continue developing the Centre for Shipping and Logistics at NHH into a business-oriented and internationally leading research group,’ Ådland elaborates. He is affiliated with the Centre for Shipping and Logistics, which is managed from NHH’s Department of Business and Management Science.
The main duties that come with the position are to initiate and conduct research relating to the field of shipping economics, and to create an environment and stimulate interest in research on shipping and related fields at NHH.
The new five-year agreement will strengthen the foundations for developing a long-term environment, and it will improve cooperation between the industry, the maritime cluster and NHH.
International value creation
The agreement is based on a common understanding of the importance of close collaboration between educational institutions and business and industry. Bergen Shipowners’ Association, the Stiftelsen Neptun Bergen foundation and NHH agree that close collaboration between educational institutions and business and industry is important in order to keep businesses relevant and up-to-date, and to contribute to improving research and education. Such collaboration contributes to regional, national and international value creation in the industry.
Chair of the Bergen Shipowners’ Association, Geir Mjelde, describes the collaboration with NHH as follows:

We are very satisfied with the results of the privately funded professorship so far and are looking forward to a new five-year period during which our members can reap the benefits of NHH and Roar Ådland’s ongoing work in the field of shipping economics.’
Bergen Shipowners’ Association has entered into a collaboration with the Stiftelsen Neptun Bergen foundation on the funding of the new professorship.
Øystein Thøgersen, Rector of NHH, is delighted with the agreement.
‘This agreement is an excellent example of how close interaction with business and industry helps to ensure the relevance of both research and teaching. Contributing to raising competence in the shipping industry is very important to NHH,’ says Thøgersen.
The government injecting funds
The private funding falls under the Regulations relating to Donation Reinforcement. This means that the government contributes funding corresponding to 25 per cent of the donation.
The new agreement will apply during the period 20 August 2017–19 August 2022.
