Ambassador for the ERC
We are delighted to announce that Bertil Tungodden has been appointed as an Ambassador for the European Research Council (ERC). His appointment underlines a strong commitment to advancing and promoting frontier research across Europe.
As an ERC Ambassador, Bertil Tungodden will take on a voluntary role designed to strengthen the visibility and impact of frontier research. He will work to promote the importance of supporting groundbreaking, curiosity-driven research, helping to highlight its essential contributions to tackling societal, economic, environmental, and policy challenges. By participating in workshops, conferences, and local events, he will act as a recognisable voice for the ERC, sharing both his personal experience as an ERC grantee and the broader significance of investing in scientific excellence.
In addition to event participation, he will actively engage with scientists, policymakers, media, and the wider public. His role will include building relationships across the research landscape and advocating for the importance of frontier research within national institutions. He will help ensure that ERC grantees are supported at every level, addressing issues that arise in interactions with local and regional authorities.
The ERC Ambassador Programme aims to create a strong network of researchers who can serve as bridges between the scientific community and society at large. Ambassadors are appointed for one year, with the possibility of renewal, and are committed to upholding the ERC’s principles of neutrality, openness, and dedication to the full breadth of the research community. Although the role is informal and unpaid, it offers Ambassadors visibility through ERC events and communication platforms, while reinforcing their standing as champions of European research.
FAIR is proud that Bertil Tungodden will represent the centre and Norway in this important initiative, helping to raise awareness of the vital role of frontier research and inspiring the next generation of researchers.
