JAP10 Japanese (A1) is the first of two elective courses in Japanese at NHH. JAP10 introduces Japanese written and spoken language for use in everyday situations. The course also provides factual knowledge about the Japanese society. The course requires no prior knowledge of Japanese.
Upon successful completion of the course, the student has acquired the following:
Knowledge
Has knowledge of Japanese geography and demography, historical eras, the development of the Japanese written language, the education system, living conditions, holidays, local transport and food.
Has an elementary vocabulary related to home, school, holidays, transport/travel, food and drink.
Skills
Can read and write hiragana, katakana and approx. 60 kanji.
Can understand and produce single spoken phrases and written sentences on everyday topics.
Can establish simple social contact using greetings and other polite phrases.
General competence
Shows understanding for other ways of thinking and communicating.
The course is organized as interactive group teaching with a mixture of lectures, group work and writing and review of assignments. The course requires active participation.
