Carbon levy could more than double the price of traditional fuel

It will take a significant carbon levy, which more than doubles current fuel prices, to sufficiently push shipping's green transition in the way Norwegian and Danish shipowners call for, Roar Ådland tells ShippingWatch.

A significant and high carbon levy, which more than doubles today's fuel prices, will be needed in order to really drive the adoption of green alternatives such as ammonia in the shipping sector, says Roar Ådland.

It is important that necessary steps are taken via the IMO to implement what he describes as "a global, sufficiently large carbon levy."
- We need to get to a level of around USD 800 to USD 1,000 per ton heavy fuel oil for ammonia to be competitive by 2030, though it could be less, Ådland says, in this interview with ShippingWatch on 11 December, 2020.
