TYS11 German for Business II (B2)

    TYS11 is the second independent course designed for students who wish to further develop their ability to communicate in German in professional contexts. The recommended prerequisite for this course is B1-level proficiency (CEFR), which can be acquired, for example, by completing TYS10. Students refine their communication skills in German with the goal of expressing themselves more precisely and with greater nuance.

    In addition to language training, students gain insight into relevant topics related to the economy and society in Germany.

  • Learning outcome

    Upon completion of the course, the student will have acquired the following:

    Knowledge

    • Has knowledge of oral and written communication forms in professional contexts in German-speaking countries.
    • Understands the main content of complex texts, including professional discussions related to business and society.
    • Has insight into key economic and societal topics in Germany.

    Skills

    • Can express themselves clearly and with nuance in German on topics related to business and society.
    • Can present and justify their viewpoints, as well as discuss the advantages and disadvantages of different alternatives.
    • Can use a wide range of standard linguistic structures and grammatical rules accurately and correctly.

    General Competence

    • Can use German independently and purposefully in professional and social contexts.
    • Can adapt language use and communication strategies to different workplace situations.

  • Teaching

    The course is structured as interactive teaching, combining lectures, presentations, and group work. Active participation throughout the course is required.

    Discussion groups may be offered as a supplement to the lectures.

  • Recommended prerequisites

    German language proficiency at B1 level (CEFR), e.g., TYS10.

  • Compulsory Activity

    3 approved individual assignments (1 oral and 2 written).

  • Assessment

    Digital written school exam, 4 hours (50%). 

    Individual oral exam, 20 minutes (50%). 

    Separate grades are given for the written and oral exams. Both parts must be passed in the same semester. In case of a retake, both parts must be retaken.

    The course does not offer assessment in the non-teaching semester (autumn).
