FIN17 Financial analysis using the Bloomberg terminal

• Topics

  This course gives students an overview of how financial markets operate, the key roles within them, how to use the Bloomberg Terminal in these roles, and essential English terminology used in the financial industry. Upon successful completion of the course students will receive Bloomberg Financial Fundamentals, Bloomberg Market Concepts, and Environmental Social Governance certificates which can contribute to increasing candidate’s attractiveness on the job market b­­oth in Norway and abroad.

• Teaching

  Combination of of traditional academic lectures, cases, guest lectures from industry practitioners, and practice sessions on Bloomberg terminal.

• Restricted access

  The course is limited to 50 students. Spots are allocated on first come, first served basis.

• Recommended prerequisites

  It is recommended that students have completed BED3/BED3E (Investering og finans / Finance) or equivalent courses at other institutions.

• Compulsory Activity

  • Mandatory physical attendance. While the course responsible may grant permission to miss a class for personal reasons, you must ask for permission in advance. A student who does not pass the compulsory course requirements to pass.
  • Completed Bloomberg certificates:

  • Bloomberg Finance Fundamentals
  • Bloomberg Market Concepts
  • Bloomberg ESG certificate

  The course requirement is only valid for the semester in which it was obtained.

• Assessment

  Portfolio assessment (one grade is given for the entire portfolio):

  1. Class participation (approx 20%) reflecting the quality of a student's comments and insights, as well as the intensity of participation.

  2. Written report on a financial topic of students' choice that requires use of the Bloomberg terminal (approx 40%). The topic has to be approved by both course responsibles. Report should be written in groups of three to four people.

  3. Subsequent presentation in the same groups including a question and answer session (approx 40%).

  Groups of other size might be allowed upon receiving permission from the course responsible.

  The course is taught in English, hence the report as well as the subsequent presentation must be in English.

  As the assessment in this course, by its nature, cannot be re-examined, the grades awarded may not be appealed.

• Retake

  Retake in FIN17 will not be offered during the non-teaching semester (autumn). Only mandatory bachelor courses with an individual assessment will have a retake assessment in the non-teaching semester.
