MAB3 Technology management is taught in the third semester, where the overarching theme is how firms can utilize modern digital technologies to operate more effectively and sustainably, and at the same time adapt their strategies, business models, work processes, organizational structures, as well as culture, competences, and skills.
Problems and questions
Future organizations are digital. Becoming a digital mature company is challenging and requires the involvement of managers in all areas and levels. In this course, we address topics in the intersection between technology and business, asking questions such as:
- How can we understand digital technology, and how can digital technology be managed
- How can digital technology be utilized to improve business processes?
- How can digitalization projects be organized and managed?
- How can organizations successfully develop and implement a digital strategy?
- How can organizations develop digital competences and skills, and a digital culture
- What does the future workplace look like?
Theories and teaching methods
In order to analyze the above questions, we draw on theories and methods from several areas, such as strategy, management, and information systems. We use different forms of learning activities, such as class discussions, cases, videos, lectures, and guest lectures.

Learning outcome
Upon completion of the course, the student:
Knowledge:
- can explain key concepts and principles related to theories and literature on digitalization, digital transformation, and digital maturity
- has gained fundamental understanding of modern digital technologies and their potential capabilities
- has acquired fundamental knowledge about how modern digital technologies might affect organizations at different levels and areas
- can critically reflect on the consequences and effects of digital technologies from an organizational and managerial perspective
Skills:
- can analyze an organization’s digital maturity based on established frameworks and theories
- can evaluate and formulate a digital strategy
- can analyze how digital technologies can be utilized to improve an organization’s processes and contribute to the organization’s strategic aims
General competence:
- can take an active part in relevant discussions on digital technology and the technological development from an organizational and managerial perspective
- can apply their acquired knowledge and skills to learn more about emerging technologies on their own and reflect on how organizations might utilize these effectively and sustainably

Teaching
The course will be run intensively for the second half of the fall semester, with lectures during week 41-46. The course will be organized based on the following structure:
Part 1: Managing digital technology
Part 2: Developing a digital strategy and managing the digital transformation
Part 3: Developing competencies, skills, and the workplace of tomorrow
Part 4: Digital security and privacy, social governance, and ethics
Part 5: Digital maturity
We use different forms of learning activities, such as class discussions, cases, videos, lectures, and guest lectures.

Assessment
4 hour individual digital school exam, written and answered in English.

Retake
Retake is offered early in the non-teaching semester for students who were registered for the exam at the time of the assessment in the teaching semester, and did not achieve a passing grade. Other students may retake the exam the next time the course is offered.
