    FRA22 French for Business II is the second course in the French elective program. Recommended prior knowledge is Level II (A2). The aim of FRA22 is to provide a foundation for effective communication in French within professional contexts. We will review relevant grammar, with a focus on the practical use of the language, specifically oral and written professional communication.

    Upon completion of the course, students will have the opportunity to take an officially recognized certification in professional French. The diploma is issued by the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry. It is recognized by CEMS and by many European countries. The certification offer is voluntary and not a prerequisite for taking the course.

  • Learning outcome

    Knowledge

    Upon completion of the course, the student will:

    • possess sufficient vocabulary to express themselves on key topics related to business and the workplace.
    • be familiar with important politeness conventions and act appropriately.
    • have adequate knowledge of the essential aspects of the French language system to produce short written documents commonly used in business settings.

    Skills

    Upon completion of the course, the student can:

    • deliver brief presentations on topics related to business or the workplace, such as presenting the advantages of a product to persuade a customer.
    •  engage in spontaneous conversations on familiar topics, express personal opinions, describe your position in a company, exchange information, justify choices, and explain matters related to work and business.
    •  use economic and administrative terminology in French to complete or draft simple formal written documents such as notes, forms, emails, CVs, etc.

    General Competence

    Upon completion of the course, the student will have: 

    • the ability to communicate with French speakers on familiar topics in both social and professional contexts with an understanding of cultural norms

  • Teaching

    This course emphasizes interactive learning. It employs the flipped classroom methodology, where you prepare for a given topic before class. The sessions are organized as interactive and adapted group instruction, combining group-based activities, discussions, writing exercises, task reviews, and student presentations. Active participation throughout the course is expected.

    Additional Information

    Students in this course will have the opportunity to take an officially recognized certification in professional French. The diploma is issued by the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Chambre de Commerce et d'Industrie de Paris) and is internationally recognized. A fee is required to take the certification exam. Participation in the certification is voluntary and is not a prerequisite for taking the course.

  • Recommended prerequisites

    The course is based on prior knowledge equivalent to French Level II (A2).

  • Compulsory Activity

    • A set of online language exercises on Canvas.
    • Mandatory participation in 50% of the classes.

     

    • 3 oral assignments: Group tasks with 2-3 students who submit videos on Canvas.
    • 1 written assignment: An individual task submitted on Canvas.

    Previously approved compulsory activities (work requirements) remain valid.

  • Assessment

    Written school exam (2 hours) 50%.

    Individual oral exam (20 minutes preparation time, 15 minutes exam) 50%.

    Both parts must be passed in the same semester. In case of a re-take, both parts must be passed again.

    This course does not have assessment in the non-teaching semester (spring).
