The basic question strategy attempts to answer is why some firms are more successful than other firms. How does strategy answer the question why some firms are more profitable than others? What conditions lead to success? These questions are answered focusing on different aspects of strategy.
Strategy is a field of study that borrows from many different disciplines such as microeconomics, business economics, industrial economics, organization theory and marketing. The field is in continual development and recently has drawn on other areas as well, such as cognitive psychology.
The purpose of the course is to give students insight in to strategy´s theoretical foundations and central issues; as well as to contribute to their ability to understand and analyze strategic problems.
The course will be a mixture of lectures, guest lecturers, discussions of problems and theories.
The participants will also be confronted with the challenges facing empirical study of strategic problems.
More specifically a student taking this course will have a professional level command of:
- Theoretical bases of the strategy field
- Application of different theories for research in substantive areas of the strategy field, e.g. sources of first mover advantages, the corporation as a source of competitive (dis-)advantages, implementation of intended strategies
- Methodological alternatives and paradigms in strategy research
- Planning executing and publishing research in strategy

is in the forefront of knowledge within his/her academic field and masters the field´s philosophy of science and/or artistic issues and methods
can evaluate the appropriateness and application of different methods and processes in research and scholarly and/or artistic development projects
can contribute to the development of new knowledge, new theories, methods, interpretations and forms of documentation in Business and Corporate Level Strategy

Intensively (3 days' modules)

Requirements for course approval
Requirements are presence during classes, and preparation for leading the discussion of selected parts of the course literature. Students are also required to prepare written abstracts of selected articles and a course paper. Topic for the course paper is chosen after consultation with the teachers. The course paper is presented at the final meeting.
Grading: Pass / fail.
