Information for incoming international full-degree students autumn 2020

Although NHH would have preferred to be able to welcome all students in the usual way, entry to Norway is currently prohibited and most international students will most likely not be able to start their studies in Bergen in August as planned.

Published 5 May 2020, 9.09 AM, updated 29 May 1.45 PM.

NHH monitors the Covid-19 situation closely and adheres to the recommendations from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (FHI).

Entry to Norway is currently prohibited. Restrictions on travel are in place until 20 August, with possible lifts for Nordic countries and close European countries in July.

The government has indicated that entry prohibitions may be in place until 1 January 2021. We do not know what the situation will be after 1 January 2021.

NHH will send all new international students more detailed information by email about their options. If you have accepted an offer but not received this email by 1 June, please contact us at

Deferment of study

We have changed our recommendation, and now encourage all new students to defer their offer until August 2021.

Assuming that the situation normalizes gradually throughout 2020 and early 2021, this will allow you to plan your move and start your studies under normal circumstances.

This is particularly our recommendation if you are from outside EU/EEC, since your transition will require thorough planning and financial commitment.

Deferment will be your only option if you have a conditional offer but are unable to receive the necessary documentation before 1 July because of delays caused by the corona virus situation.

Online teaching and arrival in January 2021

We will offer online teaching and exams in the autumn semester. However, we are unfortunately not able to offer a full course selection online.

All students who wish to start online in August, will receive a course selection allowing them to finish a first semester within their major.

We are working to establish the course selection and it will be published as soon as it is available.

From January 2021, situation allowing, NHH plans to revert to full on-campus teaching. If you choose online teaching in the autumn, you must be prepared to plan for arrival in Bergen by 1 February 2021. The semester starts in mid-January, and you should also plan for a possible quarantine period.

Arrive in Bergen in August?

Unless you already are in Norway or hold a confirmation that you will be allowed entry to Norway, we no longer recommend that you choose this option.

The semester starts 17 August, and if you come from abroad you must plan for a 10 day's quarantine. You will have to arrive 1 September at the latest.

Sammen’s housing guarantee for international students is only valid from the autumn semester (autumn 2020 and autumn 2021). If you plan to arrive in January, you must therefore be prepared to secure your own housing.

If you come from outside EU/EEC, a housing guarantee or a housing contract is a requisite for obtaining the study permit.

If you accept housing from Sammen at his point, you must be prepared to pay rent from 1 August or to cancel the contract by the cancellation deadline (30 June).
