Information for incoming international full-degree students autumn 2020

Entry to Norway has been prohibited throughout the spring and early summer, impacting the arrival preparations for international students, particularly those from outside EU/EEA.

NHH monitors the Covid-19 situation closely and adheres to the recommendations from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (FHI).

The Norwegian government recently announced that international students may enter Norway from 1 July. Quarantine regulations may apply, depending on the country from which you come.

All new international students have previously been given three options, and although the travel prohibition has been lifted, NHH will still offer these three options. Depending on your situation, you may choose to (1) arrive in Bergen in August, (2) take courses online in fall and arrive in January 2021, or (3) defer your offer until August 2021.

ARRIVE IN BERGEN IN AUGUST?

International students from EU/EEA may now with more ease plan to arrive in Norway in time for the start of the semester.

Students from outside EU/EEA will still have to apply for a residence permit, fulfilling all necessary requirements such as housing and financial ability, before arrival.

The semester starts 17 August, and if you come from abroad, you may have to plan for a 10-day quarantine.

ONLINE TEACHING AND ARRIVAL IN JANUARY 2021

We will offer online teaching and exams in the autumn semester. However, we are unfortunately not able to offer all our courses online.

All students who wish to start their studies online in August, will receive a course selection allowing them to finish a first semester within their major.

Digitally available courses

From January 2021, situation allowing, NHH plans to revert to full on-campus teaching. If you choose online teaching in the autumn, you must be prepared to plan for arrival in Bergen by 1 February 2021. The semester starts in mid-January, and you should also plan for a possible quarantine period.

DEFERMENT OF STUDY

Due to the special circumstances, you may defer your offer of admission until August 2021.

Particularly if you are from outside the EU/EEA, your transition to Bergen requires thorough planning and financial commitment.

Deferment will be your only option if you have a conditional offer but are unable to receive the necessary documentation before 1 July because of delays caused by the corona virus situation.

HOUSING

Sammen’s housing guarantee for international students is only valid in autumn semesters (autumn 2020 and autumn 2021). If you plan to arrive in January, you must therefore be prepared to secure your own housing.

If you come from outside the EU/EEA, a housing guarantee or a housing contract is a requisite for obtaining the study permit.

If you accept housing from Sammen at this point, you must be prepared to pay rent from 1 August or to cancel the contract by the cancellation deadline. The cancellation deadline has been moved from 30 June to 21 July. However, if you should decide to cancel your offer, please let Sammen know as early as possible.
