Professor Karin Thorburn, “Restructuring in the shadow of bankruptcy”

Financially distressed firms must restructure their debt in order to survive. The willingness of creditors to renegotiate, however, depends on how they would fare in a potential bankruptcy proceeding. Using publicly available information, this presentation analyzes the ongoing restructuring of Norske Skog in light of the Norwegian bankruptcy code.

Assistant Professor Walt Pohl, “Man vs. Machine: Applications of machine learning in finance”

New technological advancements allow firms to compile and analyze data in unprecedented ways. In this talk, Professor Pohl will explain why machine learning has become such a hot topic and discuss the opportunities and dangers it presents for the financial services industry, using examples from applications in securities trading, fraud detection and credit scoring.

Both talks will last approximately 45 minutes in addition to an Q&A session.
