Intelligent and sustainable management of water resources

Spiros Papaefthimiou

Water (in terms of quality and quantity) plays one of the most important roles in the achievement of sustainable use of resources. Climate change is expected to further intensify consequences (i.e. more frequent and severe droughts and floods) and thus adaptation measures will be required by water users.

While the issues are often different in each continent, nation, or even river basin, reducing the pressure on water resources is important globally as it may have serious impacts and associated benefits for ecosystems, economy and climate stability.

A discussion on the necessary technical approach including measures, technologies and good practices aiming at intelligent and sustainable management of water resources will be presented focusing for example on the reduction of the energy used (i.e. for water pumping and treatment), on mitigation measures linked to potential climate change impacts on water use, etc.
