A limited number of PhD Research Scholarships are available to finance the cost of PhD students’ living expenses during their period of study at NHH. These scholarships are available for the six specialisations in the PhD programme: Accounting and Auditing, Economics, Finance, Management Science, Strategy and Management and Professional and Intercultural Communication.
Each scholarship is for a period of four years and combines taking a PhD programme at NHH with working as a research scholar at the school. Research scholars are required to work as a teaching and/or research assistant for the department they are admitted to on enrolling in the PhD programme. The work requirement corresponds to 25% of a full position a year, with the remaining 75% being dedicated to the successful completion of a PhD.
All PhD Research Scholars are provided with office space and IT equipment, and are fully integrated into the faculty of their department. An advisor is appointed for each PhD Research Scholar on arriving at NHH and close contact is maintained with the advisor throughout the programme.
The annual salary for the PhD Research Scholarships is set according to the Norwegian State Salary Scale for PhD research scholars: State salary scale 45, which is currently 353, 000 NOK gross (which is equivalent to about € 40,000 or about US$ 50,000). The scholarships are subject to Norwegian taxes and benefits, including health care provision and membership of the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The application for the PhD Research Scholarships is combined with the overall application to the PhD programme. All applicants to the PhD programme will be automatically considered for scholarships, unless they request otherwise.
Applicants must fulfil the admission requirements of the specific PhD specialisation that they are applying to. Qualified applicants with research proposals that fit best with the research interests of the departments concerned will be prioritised. The prioritised research areas within Accounting and Auditing, Economics, Finance, Management Science, Strategy and Management and Professional and Intercultural Communication are outlined in the programme information provided for each of the five PhD specialisations. In the event of equivalent qualifications, female applicants will be given preference.
More information on the prioritised research areas is available here:
An online application process is used at NHH. Applications are not considered complete until all relevant fields on the online application form have been completed and all required information has been received by NHH. Incomplete applications will not be considered
As a Norwegian public university institution, NHH does not charge any application, admission or tuition fees. The application deadline for the PhD programme is 1st of February and 15th of November each year.
