The world is getting smaller. The forces of globalization and internationalization have led to people, businesses and markets across the globe being brought closer together than ever before. The modern firm is required to master both international and local dimensions if it aims to succeed in an increasingly competitive setting. Today’s global business environment therefore offers excellent opportunities for qualified professionals seeking international careers. The MSc in International Business (MIB) at NHH is a specialized two-year course of study specifically aimed to equip students with the right mix of analytical and practical skills for a career within multinational companies, international organizations or smaller firms whose activities involve a substantial degree of international business.
NHH was the first institution in Norway to establish its own international study programme in English with the Master of International Business (MIB) programme in 1986. From the start, the typical MIB student body has included participants from all over the world. In addition to the rigorous academic curriculum, this global orientation creates a learning environment geared towards developing the intercultural team skills and networks so important in today’s business world. The programme is thus designed to provide students with a strong theoretical base through practical case studies and interactions with the business community.
By focusing on numerous topical clusters and independent projects, the MIB curriculum caters for a wide variety of intellectual interests. Students have the possibility to extend and deepen their understanding of different aspects of modern business practices. The programme broadly focuses on three main subject areas:
Norway is a small country with an open economy, and has long and proud traditions of conducting business beyond its borders. Today, strengthened by the revenues of North Sea oil and gas, foreign trade amounts to more than a third of Norway’s GDP. However, even prior to the discovery of oil, the country had established itself as a leader in global shipping and trade in commodities such as fish and timber. As a country possessing the highest standard of living in the world, Norway also has a strong interest in contributing to business innovation and greater global prosperity.
The Hanseatic city of Bergen has historic roots as a key trading port, linking major markets in Scandinavia, Europe and the New World. It was against this backdrop that NHH was established in 1936, aiming to build on traditions that had been accumulated over centuries to foster the development of future Norwegian business leaders. Since then, the school has forged an outstanding reputation within both academic and business circles, underpinned by the excellence of its faculty.
Over the last 25 years, NHH has sought to extend its global reach through an increased international orientation and the attraction of a diverse foreign student body. The school is a member of the prestigious CEMS and PIM networks, in addition to offering a multitude of exchange opportunities. It should also be noted that Norway, together with Denmark, Finland, and Sweden, forms one of the world's most desirable and stable markets. An education in Norway can therefore be regarded as providing a gateway to the broader Scandinavian market.
By choosing to enrol in the MIB programme at NHH, you will be preparing yourself for an exciting and dynamic career in international business. You will be educated as a future leader and business manager able to cope with all the challenges posed by a rapidly changing world.
