Exchange students must apply for a formal residence permit. Norwegian authorities require that all foreign students have a residence permit before their arrival in Norway. Students from EU countries are exempted from this rule and may apply for a residence permit after arrival in Norway.

The International Relations Office helps exchange students with applying for a residence permit. The following documentation must be presented along with the completed application form for a residence permit:

  • Letter of acceptance as an exchange student (provided by NHH)
  • Confirmation that housing arrangements in Norway have been made (provided by NHH)
  • Students coming from universities outside Europe must document sufficient funds to complete the period of study at NHH (provided by the student/home institution)
  • Learning expectations

Some students may also require a visa before travelling to Norway. A list of countries exempted from visa requirements is available here.

Please check with the Norwegian embassy in your home country to find out if you need to apply for a visa and/or residents permit before travelling to Bergen for your exchange semster. You can find the location of your local Norwegian embassy or consulate here.
