Teaching / Class Schedule / Exam Schedule

When do the spring- fall semesters begin and how long does each semester last?
Semester start for spring semester is normally in week 2 and it usually lasts until the middle of June. Semester start for the fall semester usually occurs around week 34, and the semester lasts until roughly the 20 of December. The first 12 to13 weeks of each semester are set aside for lectures and teaching (although this may be slightly different in the spring semester dependent on when the Easter break occurs). There is currently no winter or fall break at NHH.

When are the class and exam schedules posted for fall and spring respectively?
Class Schedules and Exam Schedules for spring are usually posted online around the 15th of December and for fall around the 15th of June. Prior to this, class and exam schedules are submitted to the Program Boards for inspection and approval. Small changes can occur in class schedules so we recommend that you check your schedule for changes before the first week of classes.

I would like to take two courses which have the same exam date. Is it possible to change one of these dates?
The exam schedule is arranged so that courses which have exams on the same day normally also have lectures at the same time. After posting the exam schedule online, it is very difficult to find a suitable date that can work for all interested parties. Therefore changing an exam date on the exam schedule is done very rarely.

I would like to take course X and course Y, but they clash in my schedule. What should I do?
With a large course offering there will unfortunately be some overlapping and clashes. Within master studies there is a large effort put forth to avoid overlap within the same master profile, but at times it is unavoidable because the number of courses offered is greater than hours in the week available for lecturing. Our main priority is that it should be possible to take obligatory courses without them overlapping or colliding. Only after these demands are met do we attempt to reduce the number of overlap within the remaining courses. If two courses you wish to take clash, you must unfortunately choose between them, or see if it is possible to take both courses without attending lectures to both. The latter is not a solution we recommend.

According to the Study Handbook, there should be a course going in the fall but I do not see it in the class schedule in this fall semester. Why?
According to the course descriptions in the Study Handbook, all courses have a tentative semester in which they are usually taught. The courses which are actually offered are listed in each profile under each respective chapter. The course load is approved by the program board each semester at a time so as a result, there can be changes to the tentative offer that are listed. The courses offered each semester depend on the resources available and total teaching load. It will also depend on the lecturers that are available (that are not on research leave etc.).

Where will lectures take place?
The auditorium in which your courses will take place can be found in the class schedule online. Any ultimate changes will also be updated here. We try our best to inform regarding eventual room changes as soon as they are made.

There is nobody in the named auditorium– does this mean the lecture is cancelled?
Information regarding cancelled lectures are mainly posted on it's learning. In addition, there will also often be a note posted beside the actual room. The lecturer will inform you individually regarding remedial lectures to compensate for the cancelled day. It is best to follow along with the lecture plan on it's learning since lecture cancellations are often indicated here as well.

I wish to speak to the person responsible for the course. Where can I meet him/her?
You can find the person responsible for the course on the course description or schedule. You can find the telephone number and email for the respective person(s) as well as their office location on the school’s website. It may be wise to arrange an appointment with the professor beforehand, although each professor has office hours which should to be outlined either in lecture or on it's learning so you if you do not wish to make an appointment, you should attend these.

I was approved in this course last semester; do I have to fulfill the demands for course approval this semester again in order to take the exam?
Course approval is usually valid for three semesters after it is first approved unless there are significant changes in the requirements. Lists of requirements for course approval are reviewed before each exam where previous semesters in the same course code or equivalent course codes are also looked at.

What opportunities do I have to give feedback regarding teaching for individual courses?
At the end of the teaching period the Student and Academic Affairs Office posts an anonymous evaluation scheme on it's learning. It is extremely important that all students participate in giving feedback via this evaluation scheme. The results from this evaluation are looked over by both the professor responsible for the course as well as the department which has responsibility for the course, and any changes which are necessary come about based on these responses. Departments must also report the assessment to the Program Board, which has the overall responsibility for the study programmes.

During the course of the semester there might be a student panel to do a mid way evaluation. The report from student panel is submitted to the professor responsible for the course, to the department head as well as to the Program Board.
