Master Studies

Can I choose my two electives from among the courses offered in my major?
Yes, the two electives can be chosen freely from all master courses available.

Do I have to take all the mandatory courses in my major within my first two semesters of study?
Yes.

Can I take more courses than are required?
Yes, as long as you are within the time period of allotted study right and still have not been granted your degree, you are in principle allowed to take as many courses as you would like to. We recommend however that you focus on the 12 required - since it is enough to do between these courses and the thesis. Additionally, you do not get more than12 courses shown on your final transcript. If you take more than 12 courses, you will have to choose between the extras which don’t contribute to your major or minor. This choice is indicated on the form attached to your thesis.

I am expecting a child, how do I go about applying for childbirth leave?
The regulations for the program indicate the following: Leave from studies can be granted in the case that justifiable reasons for the application exist. Examples of justifiable reasons are illness, birth, carrying out of military service. Leave is usually permitted up to one year.
Application for leave should be filled out on an individual form.

I would like to take a year off to work or travel; can I get leave to do this?
Formal leave is not usually granted for such reasons. Please reference the previous question.

What opportunity do I have to go on a master exchange?
You have the opportunity to apply to go on exchange while pursuing your master studies. Exchange is normally done in the third semester. During your exchange you will take courses which will work to complete your minor (30 study points). You can find more information on exchange possibilities, places of study, and the application process on the website about exchange.

If you have questions regarding exchange, please contact the International office.

Can I take courses at other institutions and have them count towards my degree after having begun my studies at NHH?
No, exemptions are granted only based on studies passed prior to acceptance at NHH. Please refer to Regulations regarding Master Studies in Economics and Business Administration for more information. For students who have taken all 5 years of study at NHH, this involves that the exemption applied for must be dating from prior to beginning master studies. One cannot take courses at other institutions while admitted at NHH and have these grades count for the NHH degree. This also applies for those students in between bachelor and master studies.

There is one exception to this rule- courses taken while on an exchange organized by NHH.

Is it possible to do my master degree as a part time student or as a long distance student?
Lectures take place on a daily basis and attendance at these is necessary in order to get course approval to be able to write the exam. In some courses there is also mandatory attendance. These studies are therefore not suited for part time or long distance studies. Regulations with regards to study progression indicate that it is not easy to study over long distances. Check the regulations regarding study rights § 5.

I need career advice /help with my CV/application; is there anyone who can help me with this?
The SiB run Career Center can help you with this. You have free access to this offer. Please check the SiB website for more information.

Is there anything I have to do to get my degree finalized?
The thesis is often among the last elements needing completion in the master degree. Once the grade for the thesis is received, we check that you have passed all necessary courses and if this is in order, we finalize your degree. If you are considering staying a semester overtime to take some extra courses (and still have this possibility within the 3 year study right), you must notify the Student and Academic Affairs Office to wait with granting your degree. Once the degree is granted your chance to take further courses expires.

I am displeased with the conditions related to my studies; is there anything I can do?
The Master Program board  has the formal responsibility for the master programs. Within this board there are also student representatives. If there is an unfortunate circumstance you wish to call attention to, you have the possibility to take it up with the student representatives, otherwise send a letter to the program board.

There is student representation in all subject areas at NHH, as in the schools board. If you want a say in your program, you have the opportunity to run for program committee position elections at NHHS.
