Exams

When does the exam session begin?
Unless otherwise stated in the exam schedule, all exams begin at 9.00 AM although everyone should be seated and ready at 08.45. It is especially important that you comply with this fifteen minute rule if you are to write in large halls such as the Aula and Lemkuhlhallen. This is because of the large amount of students who must be checked in thus giving the proctors suitable time to do this prior to exam start.

How do I find which room I have been assigned to write my exam in?
You find the rooms in which your exams will take place on StudentWeb under exam registrations. We also post a listing of all examination rooms by the main entrance of Service. To avoid unnecessary stress, it is a good idea to check your exam room before the day of the exam. It can be a stressful experience to check the list by the main entrance at 08.45 on the day of your exam only to find out that your exam is to take place in the study hall at Hatleberg!

Which exam aids can I use/ have with me during an exam?
Acceptable examination aids should be outlined by each instructor prior to the exam. Allowed examination aids shall be bound, and private copies are not permissible unless specified by the instructor.  Otherwise, aids must not include notes, additions or loose supplements.
With the exception of language exams, dictionaries are allowed. Electronic dictionaries however are not permitted.

All examination aids will be checked prior to the exam. If calculators are permissible, you must show the proctor that the memory is clear. Also, you are not allowed to bring your calculator user guide.

Can I use my mobile phone as a watch during the exam?
No cell phones are permitted during exams, not on your desk, not in your pocket. If you have your cell phone accessible during an exam, it will be treated as an attempt to cheat. It is therefore important to always remember to leave your mobile in your jacket or backpack which are placed in assigned locations in the exam room.

The exam day assigned in the exam schedule interferes with my personal life, is it possible to move the exam to another day?
Once the exam schedule is posted online, changes occur extremely seldom. The reason for this is that all students should know at an early stage how to plan their next several months. Additionally, many students make decisions on the basis of the first exam plan, for example in terms of choosing other subjects or booking plane tickets. Furthermore, it is also extremely difficult to find alternate dates suitable for everyone taking the course.

I’m going abroad this semester; can I take the exam at the Norwegian Embassy of the country I am going to visit?
Unfortunately, NHH does not permit for exams to be taken outside of regular exam locations.

Can I take the exam even if I have not been granted course approval?
No. When a course has the course approval element, it is absolutely necessary to pass this in order to be allowed to sit the exam.

I need special adjustments for the exam because of my allergies/ dyslexia/ other special needs. What possibilities exist for this?
Students with special needs who require special condition can apply for adapted exams. The application should then be sent to the Student and Academic Affairs Office.
Examples of special arrangements are extended exam time, opportunities for extended breaks or even rest periods, own exam location with own proctors, the use of a computer or other examination aids, writing help, deaf interpreter or other practical assistance.
Special needs must be documented with a doctor certificate or with a certificate from another expert. Students with dyslexia or other writing or reading disabilities must have recent documentation from a speech therapist or other specialist describing which special arrangements are needed.

I am currently nursing and have an exam. Is there some sort of arrangement for me?
Nursing rooms are available both in Merino and Service buildings. These rooms are accessible via your student card. You can get an extension in exam time for nursing.

I have been ill before /during an exam. How does this need to be documented?
If you have fallen ill between the registration date and the exam day and cannot take the exam, you must deliver a doctors certificate at latest the first workday after the exam so that the attempt is not counted as a first unsuccessful attempt. The doctor’s certificate must specify which exam(s) the deferral applies to.
If you have to suspend the exam once it has already begun, you have to give notice to the proctor, and sign on a specific form. Suspension of an exam while already in process is considered a fail, unless you can produce a doctor’s certificate documenting legitimate illness on the date of the exam.

I was not been able to take an exam because I was ill. Can I have a new attempt?
Normally, the next possibility to write the exam coincides with the next time the exam is given. Only in the case of exceptional circumstances will exams be postponed, or granted outside the expectation of retaking it in the normal exam period. This is normally done only if the missing exam hinders you from graduating in the given semester.

When can I expect my exam results?
Results are posted no later than three weeks after the exam date. Some courses have prolonged deadlines as indicated in their respective regulations. The result of the master thesis is posted within six weeks of the day you handed it in.

Where do I find my exam results?
Exam results are posted on StudentWeb.

I am interested to see the exam statistics for the exam I have taken, is this possible?
Grade statistics for the exams you have taken can be found under Exam Results on StudentWeb. With consideration to confidentiality, exam results are not posted for exams written by fewer than ten candidates.

Everyone else has gotten their marks already however I am still waiting for mine. What can be the cause of this?
When you check results in StudentWeb  it can be smart to check the “all results” box. If you have failed a course or in repeating an exam experienced no change in the original grade, these results do not show up among the valid results.

I am dissatisfied with the grade I received on the exam, is there a procedure in which I can receive an explanation and then eventually appeal the grade?
If a marking guide to the exam is available, you should begin by cross referencing your own answers with the expectations indicated in the marking guide. Marking guides are available in the Compendium Desk at Studia or are posted after the exam on it's learning. In the case that further explanation of a grade is needed a request for this can be delivered in writing to the Infocenter via an individual web form. Such requests should be submitted no later than 3 weeks after receiving your grade. The censor can choose whether to give the explanation in a written or verbal manner. The deadline to receive your explanation is normally two weeks after the receipt of the request (please remark that during the summer months you might have to wait a little longer). You will then have three weeks to send in an eventual appeal.

Please note that although a complaint can get you to receive a better grade or no change in your grade, it can also get you a worse grade than the one you previously held. There is no appeal to the new grade; therefore you ought to seriously consider whether or not you wish to go through with the appeal process.

I have forgotten my candidate number, where can I find it?
Your candidate number can be found on StudentWeb  (under exam registrations), also on your individual copy of your exam.

I have appealed my grade, when can I expect to be notified of the final outcome?
In order for all complaints in individual courses to be handled simultaneously, the exams are sent to a new censor commission eight weeks after the original grading was posted. After that, the new censor commission has a deadline of three weeks to provide you with their final result. We will send you the final outcome of your complaint by post to the address indicated on StudentWeb as soon as it is available.

Evaluation in the course I am taking consists of several elements. Is it possible to fulfill separate elements in separate semesters? Alternately, if I repeat the course, can I choose to redo just one of the elements instead of redoing all?
In all master level courses, and all mandatory bachelor level courses which have evaluation comprised of several elements, the individual elements are considered separately. This implies at it is possible to fulfill separate evaluation elements in different semesters, and in repeating the course, can choose to redo only one of the elements. The course is only approved however once all the elements are approved (you will not be able to see individual element grades in your final grade). Also take note that if a school exam is included as one of the evaluation elements, all other elements must be completed and approved prior to being granted access to sit the exam. Therefore it is possible to complete only the home exam in one semester, and postpone the school exam to another semester but is not possible to do the reverse.

I am considering retaking an exam, when can I do that?
At masterlevel it is only possible to undertake a repeat in the respective semester in which the course runs.

I took an exam last year and would like to retake it. The course however now has a new evaluation scheme. Do I also have to do the exam in this new way?
According to Exam regulation at Norges Handelshøyskole (full time studies) §14 point 3, the following rule applies: "In repeating an exam, you will be evaluated based on the syllabus and evaluation scheme corresponding to the subject for the established time." Therefore, in the case of a repeat, you must follow the appropriate evaluation schemes (and if necessary, new syllabus) which are valid in the semester you will take the exam.

How is a final grade decided upon when there are several evaluation elements in the course?
On the grade transcript the course will be displayed with partial results together with "Pass" for the entirety:

How do I go about ordering a grade transcript?
Grade transcripts can be ordered in two ways:
- StudentWeb: on the left hand side choice menu
The grade transcript will then be sent to you via post within a couple of business days. Please note that the address registered in the system is correct, and that the mailbox has your name on it!

- Infocenter. The grade transcript is printed while you wait. Please remember your Student Identification. We issue one transcript per semester (together with a possible English translation). Should you require more, you must get certified copies of the original. You can get certified copies at the Compendium Desk in Studia Bookstore, otherwise try a copy shop.

I am dissatisfied with a grade and want to retake the exam to improve it, alternately take another course in its place. Can I get the grade in question removed from my transcript in the meantime?
Transcripts contain all passed courses and exams and it is not possible to remove any of these. Only from your final transcript can you choose to remove superfluous courses. In the case that you repeat exams, the best grades will automatically be selected for your transcript.
