The National Translator Accreditation Exam
Since 1986, NHH’s Department of Professional and Intercultural Communication exercises the formal and practical responsibility for the National Translator Accreditation Exam (Translatøreksamen). NHH offers the authorisation of professional translators on behalf of the Ministry of Education and Research. One staff member is specifically assigned to the task of supervising and organising the exam, assisted by an executive board. The department also offers general and language-specific workshops and seminars for candidates for the translator accreditation exam.
To become an authorised translator, the candidate must pass a written exam which tests the candidate’s ability to translate from Norwegian to a foreign language or vice versa. The National Translator Accreditation Exam is highly demanding and requires good command of Norwegian and a foreign language and the ability to translate authentic texts representing economic, legal, techncal and general domains with maximal accuracy and adhering to relevant genre conventions. This requires extensive conceptual and linguistic knowledge of the two languages, as well as specialised knowledge about the topics covered by the exam.
