Intercultural communication

It is widely recognised that learning a language encompasses both linguistic and intercultural communicative competence. Some members of staff conduct research on developments in the economic, political and cultural life of the language communities concerned. Central topics are Spanish languages, cultures and identities; Latin American cultures and identities; Human rights: rhetoric and reality; football, society and rhetoric; and language policy. Other fields of research relate to sociopragmatic studies of issues relating to the relationship between high and low context communication, exemplified by Norwegian and Japanese business discourse. Another field within sociopragmatics is English used as a lingua franca (ELF) in intercultural encounters, both in negotiations discourse and in e-mail communication.
