Research group in Industrial Organisation

Research topics

The group studies both theoretical and empirical issues. Theoretical issues that have been studied include merger policy, cartel stability, vertical restraints, R&D, non-linear pricing and two-sided markets. On the empirical side the focus has changed towards the use of econometric tools in combination with structural IO models to test various forms of strategic behavior.
Most of the core research topics are related to how single agents and firms behave and interact strategically. Many of the topics are directly related to policy formulation, for example evaluating the effect of deregulation or the effect of various competition policy measures. Numerous industries have been investigated, including telecom, media, airlines, pharmaceutical, electricity, cement and grocery industry

Networks

The group has a large international network. Some are members of the CESifo network and one is a CEPR research fellow. Several have been involved in a Nordic IO network, and on individual basis all members of the group have and are working on joint projects/papers with international co-authors. The group has hosted both international (CEPR, NORIO) and national conferences. The Norwegian Competition Authorities (NCA) moved to Bergen in 2004, and this has led to a strong collaboration between the IO group at NHH and the NCA.

Research output

The research output is very good, and members of the group have published in top journals such as American Economic Review, Rand Journal of Economics, Management Science, European Economic Review, International Economic Review and Economic Journal in addition to other good general journals and field journals.
