ECS 530 Analysing spatial data

Intensive PhD course at  Department of Economics, Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration
May 3-10, 2011.
Duration and credit: The course will consist of  lectures and lab exercises in weeks 18-19 Tuesday May 3 to Tuesday May 10 (possible spatial econometrics supplement 11-13 May; see timetable below).

The credits given for participation and approved project will be 7.5 ETCS.

Lecturer: Roger Bivand, professor, Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration.

Teaching language: English.

Course approval: Project submitted 1 July 2011.  Evaluation: Pass/Fail.

Course prerequisites: Basic knowledge of R and applied statistics/empirical analysis of quantitative data relevant for participants' disciplines.
Computer
requirements/ tools:
Course software: main focus on R and core packages in the Spatial task view; interfaces to GIS file formats. Participants should bring their own laptops, preferably with R installed; the course room has good WiFi capacity.
Literature: Course materials and recommended articles will be made available in the teaching support system its:learning for registered participants.

Literature
Because of the heterogeneity of interests of course participants, the reading requirement will be met by handing in a reading list of about 800 pages together with the course project due 1 July 2011 - obviously, there will be a big overlap with the project references. Initially, a number of books will be suggested, and a range of PDF copies of book chapters, journal papers, and working notes will be posted in the PDF folder in it's learning.

Core books

Other books

Only some chapters of some of these books may be relevant for each participant.

More to follow!!

Software
We will be using R, which should also be installed on your own machines. The first day 3 May will be used to help participants get friendly with R, but please try to do what you can in advance. The R sites have plenty of contributed documentation.

Timetable
The course will be held at NHH's campus, Helleveien 30, 5045 Bergen, in Aud. 14. There will be organised classes during the weekend. The final days include time to give participants an opportunity to get immediate feedback from the other participants and the instructor on their course projects.
If there are requests for more spatial econometrics content, this will follow the feedback/interaction period for those interested.
