European Lifetime Achievement Award to Agnar Sandmo

Agnar Sandmo is rewarded for his contribution to environmental economics The organization, EAERE, has chosen professor emeritus Agnar Sandmo for the European Lifetime Achievement Award in Environmental Economics. Sandmo received the award for his prominent contributions within economic analysis overall and more specifically within environmental economics.

The European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE) was founded in the 1900s and today has over 900 members from academia as well as the public and private sectors all throughout Europe. The organization works to establish forums for the development of ideas and research within environmental and natural resource management. EAERE’s European Lifetime Achievement Award in Environmental Economics is given to researchers who have dedicated themselves to work with questions pertaining to environmental economics over long periods of time and have made influential contributions to the field. Agnar Sandmo was presented the prize in connection with EAERE’s annual conference in Amsterdam at the end of June. “Sandmo received the distinction due to the large influence he had within economic analysis in general and specifically environmental economics over the past 30 years,” it says in the constitution. Further, it should be noted that Sandmo has contributed substantially to the environmental economic challenges that have received a more central place on the agenda within economic research. Also, he has demonstrated how analytical tools in the field of economics are useful for the shaping environmental politics. It should also be pointed out that Sandmo has had a large influence in a field that is related to the area of environmental economics, and particularly public economy. “Surprising and wonderful”

“Receiving this award was surprising and wonderful, and I am very proud. The work I have done in this area is close to my heart,” says Agnar Sandmo to Paraplyen. “Why did you become interested in environmental economics?” “I wrote my first article on environmental economics in Norwegian in the early 1970s. I have had a general interest in environmental conservation since long ago, and when I saw that other international economists were gaining interest in environmental economics I wished to make a contribution by introducing the field into the Norwegian milieu. “After a while I started to connect my interest for environmental economics with what I had previously done with economic analysis in other fields,” explains Sandmo.

Important Contributions

Sandmo’s colleagues at NHH are also glad that his contributions within environmental economics are receiving wide recognition and acknowledgement. “I think it is wonderful, Agnar Sandmo deserved this award. He is not formally known as an environmental economist, but he has been influential in making environmental issues more central in the field of economics,” says Gunnar Eskeland, professor of climate economics of the department of Finance and Management Science. “Today’s climate debate has mobilised many of the best economists in a way that really challenges and utilises the profession, and this is something Sandmo has contributed to in a big way,” Eskeland adds. “Of course we are grateful that Agnar Sandmo was also recognized for his contribution within environmental economics,” says professor Bertil Tungodden, who is the head of the Department of Economics. “Many people are probably unaware of how central Sandmo’s contributions have been in this important field,” Tungodden adds.
