This partnership builds on 10 years of cooperation between NHH and St Petersburg State University.

NHH's partnership with St Petersburg State University began in 1995 with the establishment of NORLET (Nordic-Russian Leadership Executive Training), in cooperation with fellow Nordic CEMS members Copenhagen Business School, Helsinki School of Economics and Stockholm School of Economics. In addition a series of Nordic companies were involved in the project, including ABB, Danfoss, Neste, Hydro, Statoil, Tetra Laval and Telecom-Finland. The main purpose of the project was to educate Russian managers in western business theory and practice via modular courses, company based projects and guidance from both academics and company managers. The project was set up for a period for 5 years, with financial support from the governments in the Nordic countries involved.

In 1999 the same Nordic partners founded NEBSEN (North-European Business School Educational Network) together with St Petersburg State University. The aim of this project was to and establish a two-year, English-language master programme in International Business at St Petersburg State University School of Management. Emphasis was placed on developing the expertise and mentoring the academic staff from St Petersburg, through sabbaticals in the Nordic institutions and the establishment of an International Department at St Petersburg State University. The project also involved student exchange, academic exchange, development of teaching materials, and the continual improvement of the programme. Funding was provided by the Norwegian Eastern Europe programme and by the EU, and the project finished in 2002.
