Before joining NHH Dag Coward studied economics at the University of Oslo, Handelhøyskolen i Göteborg and Harvard University. In 1939 he started writing his doctoral thesis at NHH. He was a leading figure in this field, and was largely responsible for the introduction of the Høyere Revisorstudium (HRS – professional, master level programme in auditing ) at NHH. Coward also played a key role in the development of NHH as a research institution, and during his period as rector there was a marked rise in the number of research positions at the school. Coward was known as a calm yet determined rector. He was leader of a number of public commissions and was appointed knight of the order of St. Olav.
