NHH was founded in 1936 and, together with its affiliated institutes SNF and AFF, constitutes the largest concentrated centre for research and study in the fields of economics and business administration in Norway. NHH strives to be amongst the foremost in Europe in its fields, and EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System) accreditation reinforces a strongly held belief that excellence in research is a prerequisite for excellence in teaching.

Through extensive links with various actors in both public and private sectors, skills and knowledge in the fields of management and economics are shared with both the business community and public institutions and organisations. Agreements with several major Norwegian businesses provide the opportunity for NHH to develop the knowledge and competence that is needed and desired by both business and society as a whole.

Partnerships and joint ventures with leading institutions overseas give NHH an international profile that extends the school's network and activities right across the globe.

The school has around 350 members employees. Of the 213 academic members of staff, 155 are professors (51 professors, 35 adjunct professors, 57 associate professors and 14 assistant professors) and 56 are research scholars (6 of whom are post-doctorial researchers). The vast majority of the academic staff hold PhDs and the faculty includes the Nobel Prize winner Professor Finn E. Kydland.

The school sets out to recruit only the best students and currently has over 2,700 students across the wide spectrum of Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, Executive MBA and PhD programmes.

NHHS (NHH Students Association)

The Student Association at NHH (NHHS) is one of the most active student organisations in Norway in terms of the number and variety of different activities. Ever since NHH was founded in 1936, NHHS has been an active and important part of the school.

The desire and will to create a diverse and rich student environment (academic as well as social) is something that has characterised NHH students through-out the years. NHHS has an important role to play in academic issues, with student committees involved in the monitoring and evaluation of the study programmes at NHH. This ensures that students are involved in the decision making process related to these programmes.

As would be expected for a leading business school, NHHS has many groups involved with economics and business issues. Næringslivutvalg (NU - the Business Committee) is the main link between students at the NHH and employers worldwide. They establish contact between companies looking to recruit and students looking for jobs, and provide all the necessary services needed by both parties. The largest event held by NHHS for the business community is Symposiet (NHH Symposium), a conference held every two years at which leading executives, researchers and students from Norway and abroad participate.

NHHS also organises one of the largest student-run music festivals in Norway. With origins going back to 1946, UKEN is a three week music festival organised every two years by NHHS. After a revival in 1980, UKEN has now grown into the second largest event of its type in Western Norway. Other musical groups with a long history at NHHS include the male choir Svæveru', the female choir Sangria, the mixed choir Optimum, the brass band Direksjonsmusikken and the Big Business Band.

NHHS has its own TV news programme, K7 Minutter, and there is also active in a broad range of sports, social, and musical activities, amongst others.
